Angus Watkins: An Artist's Journey Through Conceptual Expression
Angus Watkins is an artist whose imaginative works invite viewers into a realm where philosophy intertwines with visual storytelling. With a degree in graphic design from Curtin University, Angus initially pursued a more conventional artistic path before discovering his true passion for visual art in 2016. Since then, he has dedicated himself to mastering various mediums, particularly drawing and charcoal, while developing a distinctive style that blends the surreal with the biomorphic.
While Watkins’ artistic journey began with a foundation in graphic design, it was his decision to dive into visual art that truly shaped his creative voice. “I taught myself the rules and went at it,” he recalls, experimenting with oils and acrylics before gravitating toward drawing. His work is often described as conceptual and expressive, characterised by radical figurative characters and imaginative objects that challenge conventional perceptions.
Recently, Angus participated in the Bushwick Open Studios event in New York, an opportunity that arose through connections with fellow artists Cal from Fugazi and Ree from Hi.dogma. Their invitation to showcase his work in large prints as part of the “Chopped Liver” zine at 3rdethos gallery was a turning point. “Of course this was a ‘for sure’ and a ‘make way I’m coming over too,’” he said, reflecting his enthusiasm for the suggestion that he be part of the event.
Preparing for the show was a whirlwind experience. Angus crafted a unique outfit featuring his drawings, aiming to attract visitors and spark conversations. The setup process was frenetic, requiring him to coordinate print pickups and gallery arrangements with little time to spare. “We were extremely hung over and jet lagged,” he admits, keeping it real and highlighting the other side of these types of creative endeavours.
The atmosphere during the Bushwick event was vibrant and eclectic, described by Angus as “a weird sauce.” Visitors navigated the studios with a sense of purpose, creating a treasure hunt-like experience that made discovering art feel special. He noted the rich variety of artistic expressions present, each contributing to an environment filled with creativity and curiosity.
Interactions with fellow artists and visitors were equally captivating. The unique New York accents fostering unexpected conversations that could last for hours. Angus found himself in deep discussions about art and philosophy while drawing live, merging the act of creation with dialogue. “It was quite an electric moment,” he remarked, appreciating the warmth and openness of the artistic community he encountered.
During the event, Angus engaged in live drawing, using an easel, canvas, ink and charcoal to create on the spot. Although he had hoped to draw outdoors, rain forced him into the gallery, where the act of drawing piqued the curiosity of attendees. One memorable encounter involved a visitor who unknowingly became part of Angus’ artwork, illustrating the spontaneous connections that art can foster.
Participating in the Bushwick Open Studios was a transformative experience for Angus. He gained insight into how artists value their work, realizing that success is not solely defined by financial gain or accolades. Instead, it rests in the social exchange of ideas and the joy of creation itself. “This gave me pure clarity,” he stated, as he recognised the importance of honing his craft and focusing on the wonder of artistic expression rather than external metrics.
Looking ahead to 2025, Angus is excited about the prospects of a solo exhibition inspired by his experiences in New York. He plans to create large black-and-white pieces that reflect his journey and is considering a return to Brooklyn for a potential residency. Additionally, he aims to check out the Hong Kong Affordable Art Fair alongside fellow Western Australian artists, further expanding his artistic horizons.
Angus Watkins embodies the spirit of a contemporary artist who navigates the complexities of creativity with passion and purpose. Through his unique style and engaging interactions, he continues to explore the intersection of art and philosophy, leaving an indelible mark on the vibrant tapestry of the art world. His journey reminds us that art is not just a profession but a powerful vehicle for connection and self-expression. Imagine a gathering where laughter and creativity flow freely, where guest leave not only with cherished memories but also with tangible creations.
