Local’s Lowdown: A Haven of Wine, Nature & Adventure

We know we are lucky, those who can call the Southwest of Western Australia home. It is a dream come true for those who appreciate food, wine, natural beauty and some adventure! This corner of the world offers a unique blend of stunning natural beauty, world-class wines and exciting outdoor activities that make it a truly special place to call home.

Let’s talk about the Margaret River Region more specifically, it is renowned for its exceptional wines and picturesque vineyards that stretch as far as the eye can see. With over 200 wineries producing some of Australia’s best wines, this area has gained international recognition for its premium quality drops. From award winning cabernets and chardonnays to unique blends and sparkling varieties, the Margaret River Region is a paradise for wine enthusiasts and connoisseurs alike.

Beyond the vineyards, the Southwest is blessed with breathtaking landscapes that include pristine beaches, bushland and rugged coastline. We are home to iconic landmarks such as the stunning limestone formations of Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park, the crystal-clear waters of Smiths Beach and the towering karri trees of Boranup Forest. Nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts will find endless opportunities for hiking, surfing, whale watching and exploring the diverse ecosystems that make this region so special.

Living in the Southwest also means immersing yourself in a vibrant arts and culture scene that reflects the region’s unique blend of influences. From local art galleries to live music and festivals, the region offers a rich tapestry of experiences that celebrate the creativity and talent of its residents.

So, if you are visiting or planning a trip here are a couple of local tips on things to do:

Sip
It is difficult to cover all the amazing wineries in the area ranging from world-renowned to local and no frills. There are a diverse range of varietals and plenty of opportunity to learn about the winemaking process, meet the wine makers and discover some secrets. But if I could only visit one, I would go for an experience and tasting that wouldn’t be readily available elsewhere and for this reason Stormflower is my current go-to. Warm and understated this organic winery has a beautiful small range of wines and you can also enjoy delicious cheese and meats from their pantry to go alongside your preferred wine. Cellar Door Manager, Ute Kurys-Romer and the team are extremely knowledgeable and will make your experience something to remember.

Feast
We are also spoilt when it comes to options for indulging in delicious food but again if I had to choose one to highlight, my current favourite is Lady Lola. Small in footprint but big on deliciousness, this little bistro has a touch of luxe and plenty of fun. I can’t recommend any particular food, actually I can’t even choose when I am there myself so thank goodness they offer a “feed me” option. You really can’t go wrong with anything on the menu. I would also rearrange my whole trip just to be around for the Wednesday Pasta and Wine option, believe me it is definitely worth it. Any the drink options….well what can I say? The cocktails are sublime and the wine list is extensive, you will not be left wanting. Actually, just stop reading… go book a table now!

Move
After all that indulgence, you will need to move your body. Again we are spoilt with many fantastic trails and pathways in the Southwest but one that I visit over and over again is the Meelup Lookout Trail. It is signposted from Meelup beach and runs along the coast before heading up the hill – lots of steps up – but the best views from the top. It is worth it. If you want to extend the walk a little you can always park at Castle Rock and do the loop from there. Your lungs will be filled with fresh air, your eyes will be assaulted by bush and ocean views and you’ll probably be ready to indulge once again.

I hope these few recommendations give you a little local insight and that you enjoy visiting or rediscovering the beautiful Southwest.
